All of those are because of my lack of skills or talents, and from there on, I got faraway from painting. But when I come to Bunker Hill community college and attended a water color class, I think I am slowly getting back my love with art. Professor Yong Chen, first day in class, gave introduction about his life, show primary painting skills and tools. After that, I believe in myself that I can paint some pieces of art, maybe good pieces, if I try harder... Continue my watercolor learning experience

After the critique last week, I learn so many things in water color class; how to compare darker and lighter color, they will help each other, make each other look good; shouldn't ignore any detail from reference; should have value in painting (squint eyes from the far distance); don't try to do something different from the observation; don't focus in 1 point, move eyes around the painting ( about 10 secs); focus in where the lighting comes from... First, I just want you to know that I have never paint any piece of art for anyone as a gift. But in this Water Color class, our instructor figured out a good idea: that 's paint a water color gift cards. That is, of course, is new for me and I bet for my classmates too. And everyone feels excited about it. We have to paint in the water color paper in the scale : 4.25&5 inches. That is a challenge for me. Drawing and painting in a small space like that is not easy. But I feel good because after all I have something in my own to give to the people I love.... Continue my watercolor learning experience

Painting is always one of my favorite things to do in my whole life. And of course, I love to do that whenever I have time. But I have faced a lot of problems when I paint. And like everyone else, I prefer one topic than the others. And my topic or subject is landscape. It doesn’t mean that I am good about it but surely I feel more comfortable when painting a landscape than painting a human or others. So, my works come out better, I believe... What I've learned so far in water color painting. I knew a little bit about mixing the 3 primary colors red, blue and yellow because I'm a preschool teacher and we paint a lot. I learned by mixing 3 complimentary colors you can achieve brown or grey. The flat wash is from left to right. The radiant wash is dark to light. When you start off with your color it is a little bit darker and it becomes lighter as you use more water and less paint... Continue my watercolor learning experience

Water color painting starts from an observation of a picture or a real object. First start by looking at the picture and allow yourself to see what colors are needed. What colors need to be lighter and which ones should be darker. The Three primary colors are red, blue and yellow. They cannot be mixed from other colors, but they are the basis from which other colors can be mixed... Continue my watercolor learning experience

The first step is to find something that you would like to draw. Something that has meaning to you that you will want to mail to a friend or relative. Then cut the water color paper to the size that you want it to be. I used 4.5 x 11 inches folded size 4.25 x 5 inches. The size of the card is based on the size of your envelope. I found water color cards and envelopes at A.C. Moore... Continue my watercolor learning experience

How do I see myself as an artist? First I'm definitely a beginner. I have not had any art classes other than this since I was a child. I do enjoy drawing and will doodle when I'm on the phone. Since taking this class I found that I like the greeting cards the best. I finally feel that I'm relaxed enough to take the time to do the drawing first. Then when your ready to paint you have a plan. What I like to paint are animals and people... Continue my watercolor learning experience

Expression through art is the human species greatest asset. Through-out time all humans everywhere, from every culture, country and age have always created expressions in art. It is how we learn about our past, present and ideas in the future. Iconology reflects ideas and theories in classical and contemporary art, fashion, cartoons, comics and satirical magazines such as, The New Yorker... Continue my watercolor learning experience

The critic in class last saturday was very helpful. I was able to take comments about my paintings and others to help me develop more of an eye for things that I can do to improve my techniques. I have a better understanding of color value and will look at my paintings differently. I will be trying the "10 second glance" at each spot technique. I know that I sometimes will over work and area and that adds to my frustration. I need to understand to work on the all over painting before adding details to one area... I have actually enjoyed this project very much. I had no problem finding pre-made watercolor paper cards at Blink. The price was reasonable too. I paid a little over $5.00 for ten cards. I feel this will save me a lot of time from cutting and creating the size and searching for envelopes. It was very easy... Continue my watercolor learning experience
