I have very little experience with watercolor painting, though I did use watercolor paint as a child. We had the kind that comes in a row of little circles of color. I remember using flimsy paper that buckled from all the water. I have seen wet on wet watercolor paintings at a Waldorf elementary school where my sister works (this is a technique they teach to the elementary students there)... I've been discovering that working with color is a new and wonderful experience. Before taking this class I took Drawing 1 and I am also taking Printmaking. Both of these mediums focus on portraying light and shadow through the contrast of black and white. With watercolor there is no black and no white paint. I have enjoyed mixing color to make just "dark". It's interesting to see the color in the shadows... Continue my watercolor learning experience

Watercolor painting has started to become a bit of a struggle for me. It seems to me that as I learn more about how paintings should look, and how to achieve particular effects I have become more frustrated. One of my biggest challenges is that when I paint portraits I find it difficult to make a smooth skin texture with out loosing definition around the nose and other subtle areas of the skin... I made a greeting card to give to my mother this Mother's day. I decided to work from a photograph of her and I from when I was a baby. I chose this subject because It was a touching image of us together which I thought would be appropriate for the occasion. It depicts me on her lap looking at a picture book and we are smiling... Watercolor painting is interesting to me after watching the videos online and the demonstrations in class, it takes a lot of skill and patience to make a good piece of work. Before I thought how someone could do such good work like paint a face, or even a house, and just from the demonstrations, it is not that hard if you do it step by step and take your time... I have now experienced the life of watercolor, and the first steps to completing a painting. I am currently still in the learning process, because I have never used watercolor before. I have used the paints and mixed colors and that is a lot of fun and interesting because I never knew that three colors could make many different colors... Continue my watercolor learning experience

It is finally the end of the semester and I am sad because I enjoyed watching and learning the demonstrations in class and seeing what other people had to contribute. Also, just being in the class was fun and a great learning experience. I got inspired to continue to paint and start back drawing again because I forgot how much it let me be in my own world and express my feelings through art... For the greeting card, I chose to do a painting of my mother’s favorite china set. She absolutely loves this set of dishes and I thought it would be nice to put a piece of the dish on the front of the card. I think she will absolutely love it. In the beginning of the semester I would have never thought I could do something of the sort but after some practice and demonstrations... Continue my watercolor learning experience
