Watercolor Demo: Painting a Lemon - Build Up Value

Next, I will apply a wash to further develop the cast shadow. Looking at the photo image, you can see the yellow color of the lemon has affected the color of the cast shadow.

I mix a yellow gray color to glaze into this area. I clean the brush with water then use it to smooth out the hard edge. Let's stop working on the cast shadow for a moment and switch our attention to the lemon. In order to enhance the shadow side, I apply a brown mixture color to deepen the value. Now I squint my eyes to look at the entire painting. It is the time for an overall adjustment. I use the clean brush to soften some areas, and remove some unwanted details.

I use the small round brush to add some dark lines for the details of the navel. With the same color, I add to the dark area in the cast shadow and darken the area at the left. Let's return our attention back to the cast shadow, and now it is the time to complete it. First I apply some more dark brown color, then use green gray color mix into the dark brown from the side. Then I wash the brush and clean up the excess paint and smooth the edge.
