Grace Taylor's watercolor learning experience:
During painting my first few paintings i learned a lot. I learned first to let go of control and also how to gain control of the water. I learned how to mix color to create especially difficult color such as grey. At fist it was very difficult, but after some time mixing and experimenting, the process seemed easy. That was when I began learning about how to make lighter colors by adding more water. The hardest part was leaving room for the whites and lighter colors on the page. As these concepts became easier for me I found others to focus on. Shadow and shading were especially hard for me to grasp. The water seemed to just take the darker colors and run awry with it. The rose painting was very difficult for me to handle, but after a second attempt I feel I have learned how to shade the petals to properly portray the flower. It was so difficult to look at Professor Yong’s seemingly perfect flower. In the second attempt I stopped focusing so much on the imperfections and started taking different colors and just enjoyed the process. My flower came out much better and it made me think to relax next time I want to make a good painting.
