Vanessa Wilson's watercolor learning experience:
When I started Yong Chen's water color class I had a lot of experience drawing and painting with acrylic paint and other mediums but I was very scared to use watercolor because I thought it was too delicate for me, and I thought that it would be difficult to fix my mistakes.
Our first assignment was to paint a simple landscape including a house a path, and some trees. We were to make the setting in fall. It seemed really simple at the time, but I came to find out it was more difficult than I thought. Yong used my painting as an example to show us washing techniques.
We had a couple more assignments after that where we were to paint in only one color which really helped me understand value. And now we are working in full color.
When I started my full color painting of the women from Darfur, I was not very excited about it. I was just trying to find the most pleasing color scheme. It turned out well, but I cant wait to get into a subject that I like a little more.
In summary, I have found this class very challenging so far, and I am enjoying it because I am in school to become the best artist I can be. I have really enjoyed the critics in class, as they have not only improved my paintings, but also those of everyone else in the class.
