Cheng-Chieh Lin's watercolor learning experience:
This is my first painting experience by water color. I don't know too much about color, and cannot analyze the value of colors. You could say I am in the kindergarten's level in this area. So I was a little nervous when the first class began. Then I got the first assignment was painting a house in fall season. It was a little bit challenge at first beginning. I talked to myself, "let start at beginning." First painting, I really felt my painting was like a kid's painting. I thought I just put every color in the paper...

However, professor still encouraged us, "don't feel upset, the first painting is good, just go back and do more exercise then you will get better." He asked to take care about the light source and the houses and mountain must be reflection in the lake... etc. After class, I went back and do the assignment again. This time I painting very carefulness, and follow Yong's advises. After one and a half hour, I was exulted; I felt the painting looked better than first painting. Even it was not a perfect painting, but I still felt it's a very big improvement. When I went to the water color class again, we showed the assignment on the wall, I heard someone said to me, "I looks so beautiful." I that moment, I felt very happy. But the most important thing is that I got back my self-confident again from this class.

Note on basic color mixing: It is very good experience that professor Chen teach us how to mix our own colors by three basically colors: red, yellow, and blue. He told us, "One paper, one brush, and three primary colors, and then you can do painting everywhere." Using three colors, you could also mix dark and light colors which are close black and white, to create your own color values. It's really fun to play mixing different colors in the class.
