Draw a Sphere Model with Charcoal
The first step of the drawing is planning for the placement of the elements. What are the elements in your drawing? That is up to you. For the simplest setup, they at least include the light side and the shadow side of the object, the cast shadow, and the background area. I am using vine charcoal to draw this white ball, a sphere model. Vine charcoal is a very friendly drawing material. It is very easy to add tones to the paper, and it is also very easy to be erased and lifted off.
I pay equal attention to each step in the drawing process. I always double-check and make sure that I have made the best adjustments for each step. I am making sure that the shapes for the main object, the cast shadow, and the background form a good composition. I will consider resizing a shape to bigger or smaller or moving it around until I feel that the composition is satisfactory.
The next step is to fill in the shapes with different values. Observe while drawing. This step is about the balance between the big shapes. Again, I make any necessary adjustments before I move on to the next step. In the following step, I will add the details for each of the major shapes. I continue to balance while I am adding marks to the drawing until the drawing is completed.
